Minister Wyatt visit
January 2018
The Governance Group recently had the pleasure of hosting the Hon. Ken Wyatt’s AM MP at their workshop on Friday 24 November 2017 at the West Lakes Resort Hotel. The SA Innovation Hub and Resthaven CEO, Richard Hearn, opened with an overview of the Hub, followed by a presentation from
St Hilarion CEO,  Thuy Phan, on the Quality Framework developed by the Hub and key learnings from a recent Quality of Life study undertaken in partnership with Deakin University.

Minister Wyatt addressed the audience of Board members and CEOs  providing an overview of current government approaches to fostering quality aged care services based on the principles of active ageing and lifelong learning. These principles are based on the World Health Organisation’s Alex Kalache (also a past Adelaide Thinker in Residence), when posing questions of how a society responds to its obligations to the individual whilst balancing legislative responsibilities with what is convenient/ expedient.  This is increasingly challenging given the need to respond to the diversity of CALD, LGBTIQ, Indigenous and homeless peoples. The Minister acknowledged the important work of groups such as the SA Innovation Hub in creating a community of practice where innovative practices can be co-designed with customers and trialled. He was also frank regarding the challenges ahead for governments and service providers in meeting anticipated demand for services. The Minister acknowledged the importance of innovation and offered examples he had observed in the sector.

The Minister took a number of questions from the floor on a range of topics including the challenge of home care packages waiting list, homelessness and the particular challenges faced by remote and rural older Australians. These conversations continued more informally over afternoon tea and provided Hub members with a valued opportunity to engage with Minister Wyatt. We are looking forward to further engagement with Minister Wyatt when he returns to Adelaide in 2018 following his expression of interest in continuing a conversation with the SA Innovation Hub as a community of practice.
